Orbital Modular Stool

What is it?

The Orbital Modular chair has been designed to help surgeons and other healthcare professions who need to lean forwards and make repetitive precise movements for sustained periods during the working day.

The designers of the Orbital Modular took the integrated movement sphere away from the base so they could offer a much cheaper alternative for professionals who need chest support but don’t have the budget for the more expensive options.

Who does it help?

The Orbital Modular support chair is primarily designed to offload the spine and upper limbs and has been most commonly used by dentists and surgeons.

The chair is most commonly used to prevent injury and make surgery more comfortable, efficient, and safe.

Here is a more specific range of groups that this chair has been used for:

  1. People recovering from lower lumbar spinal fusion surgery.
  2. People looking to improve ergonomics and posture to prevent severe shoulder and neck pain and tension whilst working.
  3. Professionals who need to reduce or prevent lower back pain.
  4. Professionals recovering from rotator cuff damage.

Seat Adjustability: The seat incorporates a unique tilt and slide system that is designed to support a more upright position whilst allowing you to get a more forward leaning position over patients.

Height adjustment is achieved by manually re-positioning the height adjustment pin.

Adjustable chest support. The height adjustable chest support was made with a narrow profile to enable users to get as close as possible to the patient

Adjustable stool position: The weighted base with castors provides a stable and portable base

            Aesthetic Credentials

The Orbital Modular has been designed

to blend into surgical and dental environments. However, because of the neutral seat colour it doesn’t look out of place in manufacturing and other types of industrial environments. The standard colour is black but you can have a custom colour made to suit your space.

            Sustainability Credentials

The Orbital modular is made from a number of durable parts. The wheels have been designed to be resistant to oil, chemicals, high temperatures, grease, and steam. The Vinyl seat is tough and durable and designed for heavy use. The chair is backed by a 5 year warranty.

Each chair can come with two dynamic armrests with leather armrest pads. The pads are concave to better hold and support your arm in a comfortable, stable position. To promote mobility, there are travel limiters and bearings built into the base of the armrests so that they can slide with ease whilst you work. Additionally, they can be adapted for various heights as their height can be independently adjusted with a knob found at the centre pivot. Together these features are designed to offload the shoulders whilst enabling functional working movements.

You get to customise your chair by choosing from two options.

Option one: a flat double density foam seat. This is designed to feel soft and supportive both when you are using the chest support and also in reverse when the supports for the chest and arm are not necessary, such as during a simple consultation.

Option two: a saddle seat. The shape of the saddle drops the pelvis anteriorly, which in turn facilitates a more upright posture. The saddle seat is upholstered in black vinyl and is built to last.

The standard colour that most customers get is black. If you have a specific colour requirement, please contact us.

The low centre of gravity 4 wheeled weighted base supports foot pegs which give an alternative location for foot placement when the chair is set at a height where your feet cannot comfortably reach the floor.

From what we know, no large, independent, gold-standard randomised controlled trials have been conducted to determine the long-standing benefits of any chair brand. As such, we look to what information is available to fill that gap. One small study in 2016 did look at the effects of an ergonomic dental stool with mid-sternum chest support on the activity of muscles in the lower back. Using surface electrodes, they found that activity in the back extensor muscles was 33-50% lower with the chest support stool. It is important to note that this was a small study and surface EMG has a number of limitations. However, it does support the idea that a chest support may reduce muscle fatigue in the spine.

Unverified Reports: Unverified reports are reviews and case studies that we have found online. Whilst unverified commendations do not have the same scientific rigour and credibility as research, they can still offer some early insights into what equipment may be worth exploring in more depth.

What conditions do the Orbital chairs help?

We have found that most commendations for the Orbital chairs come from people with back issues back or shoulder issues. Most of these people have significant problems and are either in severe pain or recovering from some sort of surgery.

              Specific conditions noted include:

              -Rotator cuff injuries
              -Slipped discs
              -Generalised neck and back pain

How much has an Orbital dental chair helped?

Most people who have left feedback about the Orbital chairs have reported that it has had either a moderate or large effect on their life. Most people found that it significantly

reduced pain and discomfort, and most reported that they could work for much longer periods without feeling fatigue.

How difficult is it to use the Orbital chairs?

Setting the seat height and using the height adjustment mechanism feels intuitive.

Unsurprisingly, some people report a bit of a learning curve when it comes to mastering the dynamics of the arm supports, but it normally only takes 1-2 months to fully adjust to using these supports. We are noticing an increasing number of users opting for the saddle chair on the 5S because it helps them get an elevated position above the patient.

Interestingly, there have been reports that it can take a little while to get used to the new position in an Orbital chair because it makes it harder to contort the spine into abnormal positions due to the chest support.

What work/hobbies is the Orbital chair used for?

To date, most people have used the Orbital chairs for dental and medical procedures. Because the chair supports sitting and upper limb work in a forward-leaning position, we are expecting other healthcare professionals and technicians, beauticians, tattoo artists, etc., to also benefit from the support. But we need more feedback to evaluate this.

What is the difference between the main models? There are 4 main models of Orbital chairs. All the chairs have chest supports and can have upper-limb supports, but they have been built slightly differently to suit different professionals and budgets. The Orbital 5S is the cheapest chair. The key distinguishing feature here is the 5-star base which is the lightest base and best suited for dentists who need to move around a dental chair. The Orbital S and MS have a weighted base which makes the chair feel more grounded for surgery and microsurgery. The S and MS also have hands-free height adjustment that is operated by a foot pedal, allowing the user to maintain sterility. The Orbital Microsurgical (MS) is a larger version of the Orbital Surgical ideal for higher standing environments and microsurgery. Finally, the Orbital Modular chair was designed as a cheaper version of the Orbital S and MS chairs. The modular design allows you to adapt the features on your chair to suit your specific needs and budget.

Who uses this type of chair? The most common users are dentists, followed by surgeons and microsurgeons.

Do the arms move in 3 dimensions? Once in position, the arms move in 2 dimensions. One way of visualising this is to think about the movements you make when polishing the roof of a car.

Does the seat tilt? Yes, the seats do tilt. Please note that the 5S has an active tilt whilst the other chairs have a tilt adjustment lever.

What type of seat is there? Orbital gives you the option of a flat seat or a saddle seat. 70% of customers now opt for the saddle seat.

How long is the warranty? 5 years.

How long is delivery? The chairs are custom-made to order and can take 3-6 weeks to arrive.
