Aeris 3DEE Chair

£454

What is the Aeris 3DEE chair? The 3Dee is a hybrid stool/chair from Aeris, a german company specializing in ergonomic seating devices. Like the aeris swopper chair, the 3Dee includes a large spring in the base that enables seat bounce and tilt. The 3Dee chair has a 10cm vertical bounce and a 360-degree tilt.

This product is similar in design to a traditional office desk chair. It features a wheeled base, a convex back, and adjustable seat height.

Who does it help? The product is designed for use at standard office desks. However, it’s suitable for both professional and hobby applications.

Aeris promotes the 3DEE as an office chair, although it uses the tagline “When sitting becomes part of your lifestyle.” This implies it’s suitable for any situation that involves lots of sitting.

The two largest customer groups are:

  1. People with back injuries. The product is designed to straighten the spine, which Aeris believes improves circulation around the body. In addition, some people with back pain report that the chair helps to open up their spine whilst giving them a break from standing.
  2. People looking to prevent injury: In theory, this covers everyone aware of the potential hazards of sitting for too long. The chair’s bounce and tilt are designed to help to keep your core engaged, which some healthcare professionals believe reduces the chance of injury. It also provides lumbar support, which is designed to reduce the risk of back pain.

    Adjustability Credentials:

Height: The Aeris chair can be adjusted for height, which means you can optimize your seat position for your height and the height of your workstation.

Active Movement: It has a tensioner adjustment, which means you can control the amount of free movement you have on the aeris chair. If, for example, you have reduced core strength, you can reduce the unsteadiness of the seat and then gradually increase this as you get stronger.

    Aesthetic Credentials:

It was originally invented in Germany in 1997 by Josef glöckl to disrupt and improve the office chair market. Since then, these have been sold worldwide and won several awards for design and functionality.

    Sustainability Credentials:

Nearly 100% of it is handmade in Germany, and the production facilities have been partly powered with solar panels since the early 2000s. It is made from recyclable materials, which have been awarded with environmental and health safety certificates. As a company, Aeris has started to convert its transportation fleet to electric vehicles.

    Selecting Your Options

    Spring Size:

The stools have a one-size seat top which fits most adults. The other consideration is the spring strut. The strut comes in 2 sizes, and the choice depends on your height and weight. Please see the options below:

    • Spring Strut Standard:As the name suggests, this spring strut fits most customers (body weight 50 – 120 kg).
    • Spring Strut High: This fits users from 50 – 120 kg and is best for people who are over 185 cm tall.

    Frame and Spring Colours:

Frame & Spring: There are 2 colour options for the frame and spring: black and highly polished chrome. Please note that the spring colour must be the same as the frame colour you select.

    Seat Fabric:

There are 4 different fabric choices which are normally selected based on aesthetics, cost, and function.

    • Polyester Trevira CS (Step, Gabriel): This robust, cheapest fabric comes in black and grey only.
    • Wool (Capture and Gabriel): These fabricsare both natural fibres and so are popular for people who prefer natural products. These fabric colours are more subtle and have been selected to fit in with home office colours.
    • Microfibre: This is one of the most popular fabrics used on the Aeris 3Dee chairs for use in work office environments. Microfibre seat covers are engineered with ultrafine fibres to be slightly softer, more stain resistant, and cooler to the touch.
    • Leather: The leather cover for the Aeris 3Dee is known for its durability as a fabric and can last significantly longer than most other fabrics. Leather is tough but flexible, which makes it more resistant to punctures and tears.

    Research

There are no large, independent, gold-standard RCTs on the long-term benefits of any chair brand that we know of. In the absence of the gold standard, we look to what information is available. Unlike many manufacturers, Aeris has taken the time to invest in several research studies since 1995. To see some more of this research, please click here.

As far as we can see, nearly all the Aeris research studies have been done on the Swopper or Muvman and so there is little, if any, research evaluating the Aeris 3Dee. It is worth noting, however, that the 3Dee works on the same active movement principle as the Swopper and so the potential benefits may be similar.

In terms of the Swopper, the small short-term studies that have taken place have found Swopper sitting has had a positive effect on posture, comfort, and concentration. Two studies also reported that Swopper sitting helped with back pain. Because these studies have not been repeated in larger randomised, controlled trials, it is difficult to generalise these results to a wider population.

    Unverified Reports:

Unverified reports are reviews and case studies that we have found online. Whilst unverified commendations do not have the same scientific rigour and credibility as research, they are can still offer some early insights into what equipment may be worth exploring in more depth.

Which conditions benefit from the 3Dee? We have seen most interest in the Aeris 3Dee from customers with back pain. The main customer base comes from people who really like the idea of moving but want a full backrest with lumbar support and a chair that will not look out of place in the office.

How much has a 3Dee helped? General feedback on the 3Dee has been positive over the years. There are not many reviews, but we have had reports that some people with back pain have found it has made a huge difference to their sitting comfort.

How much effort do you need to put in? With very few adjustments, there is a minimal learning curve for using the 3Dee. Active sitting is intuitive for most people, but it can take a little while to get used to the level of bounce for some people.

What work/hobbies is the 3Dee best for? Most people use their 3Dee for work in front of a workstation, and so it most often used for desk-based work, including computer work and writing.

Is it better to get a Swopper work chair or a 3Dee? It really depends on what you want the chair for. The Aeris 3Dee is a complete chair with an adjustable backrest and lumbar support. In contrast, the Swopper chair with a backrest has less adjustments. Practically, this means you are going to be able to get better positioning of the lumbar support on the 3Dee. If cost is your priority and you just need something you are going to occasionally lean on, then it is worth considering the Swopper with a backrest.

Does the 3Dee look like a normal chair? Yes, the 3Dee from Aeris looks like a normal office chair and will fit in with most other standard office furniture.

Can you adjust the height on the 3Dee? Yes, there is a small adjustment lever on the right side that allows you to adjust seat height.

Can I use a 3Dee with a height-adjustable desk? Yes, the 3Dee will work well with a height-adjustable desk, as you will be able to transition between active sitting and standing.

What do I do if the gas stem is stiff? Occasionally, the gas stems do get stiff. To resolve this, you can use a little WD-40 or Vaseline on the central projection mechanism and it will normally loosen up.

Can you adjust the lumbar support on the 3Dee? Yes, there is a lever on the inside of the backrest bar that allows you to adjust the position of the lumbar curve.

Can you change the back angle? The 3Dee is different to a lot of chairs in the sense that the backrest is not independently adjustable. Instead, you can adjust the tension of your backrest, which will give some more movement.

Does the 3Dee come in different colours? Yes, the chair comes in a range of fabrics and colours that can be selected from the options.

Are there benefits of having a backrest? Whilst many people use Aeris stools without a backrest, we have found over the years that some people who sit for longer periods or are used to a backrest do prefer to have the option of resting back on a backrest from time to time, and it was for this reason that the 3Dee was created.
