MATT HAMPSON BLUEPRINT:
Building A Life Changing Foundation After A Spinal Cord Injury

Matt Hampson, UK

Summary: In 2005, 20-year-old Matt Hampson was involved in a rugby accident that left him paralysed from the neck down
At the time of the incident, Matt was paying as a prop when a scrum collapsed which dislocated his neck and severely damaged his spinal cord.

As a professional athlete, on the cusp of an international breakthrough, Matt talks about having some very difficult days as his life as he knew it was changed forever.
In matts own words he said:
“I’m not going to lie, I had some dark days. I cried myself to sleep a few nights”

First game changer: Embracing what he had instead of what he had lost:

Whilst Matt was badly injured, he felt a huge amount of support from his family, friends and rugby community.
He turned his focus towards others and started building the Matt Hampson Foundation.
Backing up his motto Get busy living, Matt works with the foundation to provide to help to sports people who have had life changing injuries. His rehabilitation centre also provides mental health assistance, as adjusting to a new way of life can be extremely difficult. Away from the centre, the Get Busy Living foundation also provides some financial assistance to those affected by significant injuries
Matt has retained his passion for sport and spends time informally mentoring and coaching players from his old club.

The little things that helped a lot

  • Mental Rehab: Maintaining his mental health was vital when adjusting to injuries.
  • Helping others: Sharing experiences with others enabled Matt to develop a strong purpose
  • Flexible mindset: Whilst Matt’s identity as a player was changed forever, he learnt that his life could still have a real purpose. Even if it isn’t what you originally thought, it’s possible to find a new path for yourself based on your new life situation.
